Inspired by the rugged individualism and hard work of the American Cowboy, I named my company after the Chisholm Trail; a cattle trail traveled by the cowboys seeking financial rewards and a better life. Their struggles are symbolic of the countless challenges we face in our own lives on the road to success.
The iconic cowboy represents the best of America— courage, hard work, and overcoming insurmountable challenges. They not only worked hard to improve their financial state and, their very lives, but they also stood for something. While unspoken on the range, cowboys lived by a code of conduct to guide them through their challenges. Years after I founded Chisholm, a colleague recommended the book “Cowboy Ethics- What Wall Street Can Learn from the Code of the West” by James P. Owen. He too was inspired by the American Cowboy. He distilled the ethos of the Cowboy into ten principles— the Cowboy Ethos.
- Live each day with courage.
- Take pride in your work.
- Always finish what you start.
- Do what has to be done.
- Be tough, but fair.
- When you make a promise, keep it.
- Ride for the brand.
- Talk less and say more.
- Remember that some things aren’t for sale.
- Know where to draw the line.
